This week, self-portraits! With very dramatic lighting.
So I’m trying something different this week, painting from my own photo reference. I recently picked up a basic photography lighting setup so I could take better reference photos, and actually control the lighting the way I want.
The setup I’m using is essentially the exact setup described on Strobist’s Lighting 101 guide (external flash mounted on a light stand, connected to the camera using a sync kit). My setup is actually even more spare than that, because I didn’t even use an umbrella to diffuse the light — just a direct flash. But this way I get those dramatic, interesting cast shadows that painters love and photographers always want to avoid.
